Mobile payments cover two things: taking payments on a phone or handheld device, and letting customers pay with their phones through wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay. Both reduce friction and open up new places to sell.
Everpay supports tap-to-pay, mobile readers, in-app payments and wallets.
A mobile wallet stores a tokenized version of a customer's card on their device. When the customer pays, the device authenticates them with a fingerprint, face scan or passcode and sends the token, a one-time code and transaction data instead of the real card number. The merchant never sees the underlying card details, which reduces exposure if data is intercepted.
For merchants, wallets are accepted at the terminal through contactless readers and online through checkout buttons on mobile web and in apps. Availability depends on the device, the issuer and the market. Some merchants can also accept contactless payments on a compatible phone without a separate reader, subject to device and program requirements. Check current requirements with your account team before planning a rollout.
A mobile reader pairs with a phone or tablet and suits businesses that sell away from a counter: markets, pop-ups, deliveries, mobile services and events. It is typically smaller and cheaper than a full terminal, and can be shared between staff.
The trade-offs are practical. Battery life, connectivity and receipts matter more outdoors than in a shop. Think about how you will take payment if mobile data is weak, how receipts reach customers and how sales sync into your reports. For a fixed-location business, a reader can still serve as a backup or a way to take payment on the floor. See Everpay POS for the broader hardware options and retail or restaurant setups for fixed-location use.
In-app payments embed checkout in your own mobile app through the API and SDKs. The main design goals are to keep raw card data off your servers, support wallets and saved methods, and handle authentication cleanly when an issuer requires it. Tokenization and hosted fields help with the first goal, and 3D Secure handles the third.
Mobile also brings its own concerns: app store rules on digital goods, deep links back from bank apps, and handling interrupted sessions when a customer switches apps mid-payment. Test those flows on real devices. Start in the developer documentation, read about security and see online payments for the web side of the same journey.
Wallets use device biometrics and tokenized card data, which is faster for the customer and more secure than typing card numbers.
Pocket-size readers let you take card payments at markets, deliveries and events.
