How to Choose the Best Payment Gateway for Ecommerce Businesses

    The short answer

The best payment gateway for an ecommerce business is the one that maximizes approved sales at the lowest total cost: it supports your customers' preferred payment methods and currencies, routes declined transactions to backup processors, includes fraud screening and 3D Secure, and integrates cleanly with your cart and accounting stack.

Most merchants shop for an ecommerce payment gateway by comparing the headline rate, usually something like 2.9% plus a fixed fee. That number matters, but it is rarely the biggest line in your payments P&L. A gateway that declines 3% more good customers costs you far more than a 0.2% difference in pricing, and a checkout that does not offer a customer's local payment method simply loses the sale.

This guide gives you a framework for choosing a gateway on total cost and revenue impact, not just price. If you want the basics first, start with our explainer on how merchant payment processing works.

What an ecommerce payment gateway actually does

A payment gateway is the technology that securely captures payment details at checkout, encrypts them, sends them to the card networks or banks for authorization, and returns an approved or declined result to your store in seconds. It is the online equivalent of the card terminal at a physical till. For a deeper definition, read our overview of the Everpay payment gateway.

The eight criteria that matter most

    1. Authorization (approval) rate

Every false decline is a lost order and often a lost customer. Ask how the gateway handles soft declines, whether it retries intelligently, and whether it can cascade a declined transaction to a second acquirer. Multi-acquirer routing is one of the few levers that raises approval rates without changing anything on your storefront. See our guide to improving payment approval rates.

    2. Payment methods and currencies

Cards are only part of the picture. Depending on your market, customers expect wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay, bank debits and transfers, buy-now-pay-later, and regional methods like iDEAL, Interac or PIX. Check coverage for every market you sell into today and the ones you plan to enter next. Our payment methods directory lists what Everpay supports.

    3. Fraud prevention and chargeback tools

Look for machine-learning risk scoring, device intelligence, velocity checks, 3D Secure 2 and address and CVC verification, plus tools to manage disputes. Strong fraud tooling should reduce chargebacks without blocking legitimate buyers. Learn more about fraud prevention at Everpay and our payment fraud prevention best practices.

    4. Total cost, not headline rate

Compare the full fee stack: per-transaction fees, cross-border and currency-conversion surcharges, chargeback fees, refund fees, payout fees, monthly or PCI fees, and any rolling reserve. Ask for a worked example using your average order value, card mix and international share.

    5. Checkout experience and conversion

Hosted checkout, embedded components and payment links each trade off speed of launch against design control. A good gateway offers all three so you can start fast and customize later. Fewer fields, saved cards and one-click wallets all lift conversion.

    6. Integrations and developer experience

Check native plugins for your platform (Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Magento), accounting and ERP connectors, and the quality of the API, SDKs, webhooks and sandbox. Browse the integrations directory or the developer documentation.

    7. Settlement speed and payouts

Cash flow depends on how quickly funds reach your bank, in which currencies, and whether the processor holds a reserve. Settlement timing is a hidden cost, which we quantify in The Float Tax.

    8. Risk appetite, support and compliance

Some processors decline or freeze merchants in higher-risk categories. Confirm up front whether your business model is supported, what underwriting looks like, and how fast support responds. Check security certifications and compliance posture on the provider's security page.

Gateway vs. merchant account: do you need both?

Traditionally a merchant needed a separate merchant account and a gateway. Many modern providers bundle both, while others let you bring your own account. We explain the difference in payment gateway vs. merchant account.

    A simple selection process

    1. List your markets, currencies and must-have payment methods.
    2. Shortlist three gateways that cover them and support your business category.
    3. Request an effective-rate quote using your real average order value and card mix.
    4. Run a sandbox test of checkout, refunds, webhooks and 3D Secure.
    5. Pilot with a slice of live traffic and compare approval rate, not just price.
