How to Improve Payment Approval Rates: 10 Proven Tactics
By Everpay Payments Team, Payments infrastructure · · 7 min read

The short answer
To improve payment approval rates, route transactions across multiple acquirers, retry soft declines intelligently, use local acquiring, send complete and accurate transaction data, apply 3D Secure on risky payments, tokenize saved cards with network tokens and analyze decline codes by issuer and country to fix the biggest causes first.
The authorization rate is the share of payment attempts that the issuing bank approves. A one-point improvement on a large volume is pure incremental revenue: no extra traffic, no extra marketing. Yet many merchants never measure it by country, card type or decline code. Here is how to start.
First, measure the right things
- Authorization rate overall and by country, card brand, BIN and payment method.
- Top decline codes and their share of lost volume.
- Soft declines (retryable) versus hard declines (final).
- Approval rate for first-time versus returning customers and recurring charges.
10 tactics that raise approval rates
1. Route across multiple acquirers
Different acquirers have different issuer relationships and local licenses. Routing each transaction to the acquirer most likely to succeed lifts approvals. See Everpay's multi-acquirer routing in the payment gateway.
2. Cascade declines to a backup processor
If the first attempt gets a soft decline or a technical error, automatically retry through a second acquirer. The customer sees one seamless checkout.
3. Retry soft declines intelligently
For recurring billing, retry failed charges at different times of day or month, such as just after payday, and respect network rules on retry limits. Avoid hammering hard declines like stolen-card codes.
4. Use local acquiring
Domestic transactions are approved more often than cross-border ones. If you sell abroad, process through acquirers in the customer's region; see how to accept payments internationally.
5. Send clean, complete data
Pass accurate billing address, postal code, CVC and customer details. Consistent descriptors and merchant category codes also help issuers trust the transaction.
6. Apply 3D Secure intelligently
3D Secure can lift approvals on risky payments because issuers are more comfortable approving authenticated transactions, but it adds friction. Use risk-based triggering rather than challenging everything.
7. Use network tokens and account updater
Expired or reissued cards are a top cause of failed subscriptions. Network tokens and card account updater services refresh credentials automatically.
8. Tune fraud rules to cut false positives
Rules you set yourself can reject good customers before the issuer even sees them. Review blocked transactions regularly. More in our fraud prevention best practices.
9. Offer alternative payment methods
When a card is declined, offering a bank transfer, wallet or local method can save the order. See supported payment methods.
10. Fix the checkout itself
Clear error messages, address autofill, saved cards and wallet buttons reduce user-error declines.
Decline codes: what they usually mean
| Decline type | Typical meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Insufficient funds | Customer lacks balance | Retry later; offer another method |
| Do not honor | Generic issuer refusal | Retry via another acquirer; ask for 3DS |
| Expired card / invalid number | Bad credentials | Prompt for update; use account updater |
| Suspected fraud / lost / stolen | Hard decline | Do not retry; offer other methods |
| Authentication required | Issuer wants SCA | Trigger 3D Secure and retry |
| Processor error / timeout | Technical issue | Retry or cascade immediately |
Choosing the right payment processor for approvals
When comparing providers, ask for approval-rate data on merchants similar to you, not just pricing. Ask whether routing is automatic, whether cascading is supported and how they handle higher-risk categories. Our guide to choosing a payment gateway has a full checklist.
