Payment Fraud Prevention Best Practices for Online Merchants

Fraud prevention shield representing layered payment security controls

    The short answer

Effective payment fraud prevention uses layers: secure tokenized checkout, address and CVC verification, 3D Secure authentication, machine-learning risk scoring, velocity and device checks, clear descriptors and a disciplined chargeback process. The goal is to block fraud while keeping false declines low, because blocked good customers cost revenue too.

Fraud and false declines are two sides of the same problem. Tighten rules too far and you reject real customers; loosen them and chargebacks climb, your dispute ratio rises and processors may restrict your account. The best programs treat fraud as a data problem and tune it continuously.

The most common types of payment fraud

    • Stolen card use (card-not-present fraud): criminals use stolen details to buy goods online.
    • Account takeover: attackers log into a real customer's account and spend stored payment methods.
    • Card testing: bots run many small transactions to find valid cards.
    • Friendly fraud: a genuine customer disputes a legitimate purchase.
    • Refund and promo abuse: exploiting policies for gain.

    Layer 1: Secure the data

Use a hosted or tokenized checkout so raw card numbers never touch your servers. This reduces PCI scope and limits damage in a breach. See Everpay's security and compliance approach.

Layer 2: Verify the customer and the card

    • Require CVC and use address verification (AVS) where available.
    • Apply 3D Secure 2 for higher-risk transactions; it can shift liability to the issuer on authenticated payments, and is mandatory under SCA in parts of Europe.
    • Use risk-based authentication: challenge only suspicious payments so good customers get a frictionless flow.

    Layer 3: Score every transaction

Machine-learning risk scoring combines signals such as device fingerprint, IP and geolocation, email age, order velocity and card behavior to produce a risk score in milliseconds. Route low-risk traffic straight through, challenge medium risk and block or review high risk. Learn about Everpay's fraud prevention tools.

Layer 4: Add velocity and pattern rules

    Layer 5: Manage chargebacks deliberately

    • Use a clear billing descriptor so customers recognize charges.
    • Keep delivery proof, communications and refund policy accessible.
    • Respond to disputes with evidence inside the deadline.
    • Track your dispute ratio; high ratios can trigger monitoring programs and account restrictions.
    • Offer easy refunds; a refund is cheaper than a chargeback.

How fraud prevention improves payment approval rates

It may seem counterintuitive, but better fraud controls often raise approvals. Issuers approve more when transactions arrive with rich, clean data, strong authentication and low historical dispute rates. A merchant with controlled chargebacks keeps good standing with acquirers and avoids reserves. Meanwhile, risk-based screening lets you stop approving the transactions that would later become disputes. Read more in how to improve payment approval rates.

    A monthly fraud review routine

    1. Review fraud rate, chargeback ratio and false-decline estimates.
    2. Sample blocked and challenged transactions to find good customers caught by rules.
    3. Check top decline reasons by country and payment method.
    4. Update velocity limits and rules based on new attack patterns.
    5. Share findings with support and finance.

For merchants in higher-risk categories, strong controls are what keep processing options open; see what to do when your processor drops you. To review your own setup, talk to our team.
